Contemporary Art

Since last year I have enjoyed studying History of Art because it has been very interesting and I have learned a lot. We have reviewed artistic periods and movements such as Renaissance, Baroque and Romanticism. This semester, in addition to History of Art, I have a new subject that is Theoretical Seminar, in which we are reviewing Contemporary Art. It has become my new favorite subject because we are reviewing others types of artistic expressions that defy the canon of the Academy. Before this subject, Contemporary Art was difficult for me to understand or I did not know what the artists wanted to say. However, I understand now that they are polemic artistic expression that respond, criticize and sometimes mock what is considered "good art" within the classical canon. Even, there are artists who do not want to say anything with their work, which is also a way to go against the canon. This reaction leads to new forms of artistic expressions and thus legitimizing other materialities and supports, beyond painting and canvas, such as serigraphy, installations and industrial objects. For all of the above, Contemporary Art requires a deeper observation, thus leading to a more enriching aesthetic experience.
